Ascendant (lagna) calculator
The lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It fixes the first house, and so where every graha in your chart falls.
Your birth details
How it is worked out
The ascendant moves through all twelve signs every day, about one sign every two hours, so it depends on the exact time and place of birth far more than the Moon sign does. Two people born an hour apart in the same city can have different lagnas.
Your lagna is read as your body, temperament and the way you come across before anybody knows you. In a North Indian chart it is the top diamond; in a South Indian chart it is the marked square.
It is worked out from local sidereal time at the birthplace’s coordinates and converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsha. If you are unsure of your birth time, treat a lagna near the edge of a sign with caution.
