How matching works
Ashtakoot Guna Milan compares two charts through the Moon alone: the nakshatra it sits in and its sign. From those it scores eight koots, Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8, which add up to 36.
Varna and Gana are scored from the groom’s side, so it matters which chart is whose. Bhakoot and Nadi are all or nothing, and losing them is what the tradition calls Bhakoot dosha and Nadi dosha.
The bands used here: 32 and above is Excellent, 25 to 31.5 is Good, 18 to 24.5 is Acceptable, and below 18 is Difficult.
Mangal dosha is read from Mars in each full birth chart, not from the Moon, so it sits outside the 36. It is checked in both charts and shown beside the score; when both carry it, the tradition holds that it cancels.
Traditions differ in the small print, and this site follows one convention for each: Yoni scores 4 for the same animal, 0 for the seven classical enemy pairs and 2 otherwise; Vashya scores 2 for the same class, 0 when one sign is Vanachara and the other is not, and 1 otherwise.
