How the dates are worked out
The fast is kept on the day Chaturthi is running at moonrise, since it is broken by offering arghya to the Moon. Moonrise is calculated for the city chosen; it can differ by twenty minutes or more between cities.
Questions
When is the Sankashti fast broken?
After moonrise, once the Moon has been seen and offered arghya, followed by Ganesha puja. That is why the moonrise time matters more than the tithi on this day.
Is Karwa Chauth a Sankashti Chaturthi?
Yes. Karwa Chauth is the Sankashti Chaturthi of Kartika (Ashwina in the amanta calendar), kept by married women with a fast that is broken at moonrise.
