How the dates are worked out
The fast is kept on the day Ekadashi prevails at sunrise, the rule followed by most households (Smarta). When Ekadashi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, it is kept on the day it covers most. The parana, the breaking of the fast, is the next day: after Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, within Dwadashi, and in the morning where possible. Every time is calculated for the city chosen.
Questions
What is parana?
Parana is the breaking of the Ekadashi fast on the next day, Dwadashi. It is done after Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, and before Dwadashi ends, ideally in the morning; breaking the fast outside this window is traditionally held to undo it.
Why do Smarta and Vaishnava Ekadashi sometimes fall on different days?
Vaishnava traditions, such as ISKCON, keep Ekadashi on the next day when Dashami is still running at arunodaya, the 96 minutes before sunrise. In those years the Vaishnava fast is one day after the Smarta date shown here.
What can be eaten on Ekadashi?
Grains and beans are avoided. Those who do not keep a full or water-only fast usually take fruit, milk, nuts, and foods such as sabudana, kuttu or singhara flour and potatoes.
