What is Mulank? Meaning and how to calculate it
Mulank (मूलांक) is the root number of Indian numerology: the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9. It is also called the psychic or birth number.
What Mulank means
The word joins मूल (mool), root, and अंक (ank), number: the number at the root of you.
The tradition reads it as your nature: how you see yourself, and how the people closest to you would describe you. Each number is ruled by a graha, from the Sun for 1 to Mars for 9, and is read through what that graha signifies.

How to calculate your Mulank
Take the day of birth and add its digits until one remains: born on the 29th, 2 + 9 = 11, and 1 + 1 = 2. The month and the year play no part; they belong to the Bhagyank.

Method and sources
- Numbers: the Indian system, every number reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9 (no master numbers), each ruled by a graha: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars. Western numerology following Cheiro gives 4 to Uranus and 7 to Neptune instead.
- Friendly and unfriendly numbers: the natural friendships of the grahas in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the same rule Guna Milan uses, with Rahu standing in for Saturn and Ketu for Mars (“Shanivat Rahu, Kujavat Ketu”).
- Name numbers: the Chaldean letter values, as Cheiro published them, for names written in English letters.
- Colours, days, gemstones and mantras: those of the ruling graha in Jyotish. Other numerologists give other days and colours, especially for 4 and 7, whose grahas rule no weekday.
- Readings are traditions, not predictions: nothing here is medical, financial or legal advice, or a reason to make a decision on its own.
