How the date and muhurat are worked out

The fast is kept on the day Shukla Ekadashi prevails at sunrise; when Ekadashi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, on the day it covers most; and when Dwadashi ends before the sunrise after the fast, a day earlier, so that the fast can be broken within Dwadashi. The parana, breaking the fast, is on the next day: in pratahkal, the first fifth of the day, after Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, and before Dwadashi ends. When Hari Vasara runs past pratahkal, midday is avoided and the parana moves to the afternoon. All of it is calculated for each city.

This year Ekadashi begins after sunrise on one day and ends close to sunrise on the next. In the east and the south it is still running at the next sunrise, but Dwadashi then ends before the sunrise after that, so the Smarta fast stays on the first day there too, as Drik Panchang lists it; that later day appears in panchangs as the Gauna or Vaishnava Ekadashi. Vaishnava calendars, which set aside an Ekadashi touched by Dashami at dawn, keep the later day, so dates differ between traditions.
