How the date and muhurat are worked out
The fast is kept on the day Shukla Ekadashi prevails at sunrise; when Ekadashi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, on the day it covers most. The parana, breaking the fast, is on the next day: in pratahkal, the first fifth of the day, after Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, and before Dwadashi ends. When Hari Vasara runs past pratahkal, midday is avoided and the parana moves to the afternoon. All of it is calculated for each city.
This year Ekadashi begins after sunrise on one day and, in much of India, ends before sunrise on the next, so cities differ: where sunrise comes before Ekadashi ends, as in the east and the south, the fast falls a day later. Some Smarta panchangs list the earlier day everywhere, and Vaishnava calendars, which set aside an Ekadashi touched by Dashami at dawn, often keep the later day, so dates differ between traditions as well as between cities.
