Purnima 2027

Every date in 2027, worked out for Delhi from the tithi, sunrise and moonrise.

Purnima, the full moon, ends the bright fortnight of every month. It is a day for a holy bath, giving and Satyanarayan katha, and several are festivals in their own right: Buddha Purnima, Guru Purnima and Kartik Purnima among them.

How the dates are worked out

The Purnima day is the one on which Purnima prevails at sunrise; the bath, the giving and the named full moons are kept then. The Purnima vrat is kept when Purnima is running at moonrise, so when Purnima begins in the afternoon the vrat falls on the evening before, and both days are shown. Moonrise and the tithi are calculated for the city chosen.

Questions

Why are two dates shown for some Purnimas?

Because the vrat and the day are decided differently. The vrat needs Purnima at moonrise, which can fall on the evening before; the bath and the giving need Purnima at sunrise. When Purnima begins in the afternoon, they fall on consecutive days.

What is done on Purnima?

A bath in a river or at home before sunrise, giving food or money, Satyanarayan puja and katha, and for those who fast, breaking it after seeing the Moon.
