What a choghadiya is, and how it is worked out

A choghadiya is one eighth of the daylight or one eighth of the night, so the day has eight and the night has eight. Each is named after one of seven kinds: Amrit, Shubh and Labh are good to begin something in, Char is good for travel and anything on the move, and Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided.

The day’s first choghadiya is set by the weekday: Udveg on Sunday, Amrit on Monday, Rog on Tuesday, Labh on Wednesday, Shubh on Thursday, Char on Friday and Kaal on Saturday. The rest follow in a fixed order, and the night has a sequence of its own.

Because each is a fraction of that day’s daylight or night, not a fixed hour, they lengthen in summer, shorten in winter and move from city to city with the sunrise. Every time here is for Toronto, Canada, from the same sunrise and sunset as the panchang.

Rahu Kaal is counted separately, and a Rahu Kaal inside a good choghadiya is still usually avoided. It is marked on the row it falls in.

Today’s choghadiya for Toronto

Choghadiya divides the day from sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts, and the night from sunset to the next sunrise into eight more. Each part is named after its ruling planet: Amrit, Shubh and Labh are good for beginning things, Char is neutral, and Rog, Kaal and Udveg are times to avoid.

Because the parts are measured from sunrise and sunset in Toronto, they are not the same length as an hour and they shift through the year. The times on this page are worked out for Toronto’s own sunrise and sunset today, so they can differ by many minutes from a choghadiya printed for another city.
