Kartik Purnima, the full moon of Kartika, is one of the holiest days of the year for a bath in the Ganga or another sacred river, for lighting lamps and for giving in charity. Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti on this full moon, and in Varanasi its evening is Dev Diwali.

How the date and muhurat are worked out
The day is the one on which Purnima prevails at sunrise, the morning of the bath. We give brahma muhurta, taken as the 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise, and pratahkal, the first three of the day’s fifteen muhurtas, wherever Purnima runs in them, for each city.
When Purnima begins in the night and ends the next evening, as this year, panchangs agree on the bathing day. In years when it covers two sunrises or none, some take another day, and the Purnima vrat may be kept the day before the bath.

Why bathe in a river on Kartik Purnima?
The month of Kartika is held especially sacred for bathing at dawn, and its full moon most of all. A bath in the Ganga, the Yamuna or another holy river, or at home with Ganga water, followed by charity and lamps, is the day’s main rite.
Is Guru Nanak Jayanti on Kartik Purnima?
Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary, Gurpurab, is celebrated on the full moon of Kartika, though gurdwaras announce the date themselves.
