How the date and muhurat are worked out
The day is found from the tithi alone: it is the day on which Shukla Pratipada prevails at sunrise, not simply the day after Diwali, which in some years it is not. We give the pratahkal muhurat, the first three of the day’s fifteen muhurtas, and the sayankal muhurat, the last three, wherever Pratipada still runs in them, for each city.
When Pratipada begins after sunrise, some observe on that day and some on the next; we follow the sunrise rule. Where Pratipada ends before evening there is no sayankal muhurat in our table, though some panchangs list the evening window regardless.
