How the date and muhurat are worked out
For each city we find the evening on which Trayodashi covers pradosh, the 144 minutes after sunset. The puja muhurat is the part of pradosh when Vrishabha, a fixed sign, is rising while Trayodashi still runs. Sunset, the tithi and the rising sign are calculated for the city from the positions of the Sun and Moon.
Panchangs agree on the date this year but not on the minutes. Some take pradosh as about two and a half hours rather than 144 minutes, and some leave out the Vrishabha condition, so published puja windows for the same city differ by up to an hour and a half. Some panchangs also place the Yama Deepam on the following evening.
