Chhath Puja 2026 in Varanasi
15 November 2026. Every time below is calculated for the city from its own sunrise, sunset and tithi.
Chhath Puja, kept above all in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, is the worship of the Sun and Chhathi Maiya on Shashthi, the sixth day of the bright fortnight of Kartika. Over four days the vrati keeps a strict fast and, standing in water, offers arghya to the setting Sun on the Shashthi evening and to the rising Sun the next morning.

How the date and muhurat are worked out
The main day is the one on which Shukla Shashthi prevails at sunset, when the sandhya arghya is given. The usha arghya is at sunrise the next morning, and Nahay Khay and Kharna are the two days before, so the four days run on consecutive dates. Sunrise and sunset, the moments of the two arghyas, are calculated for each city.
Panchangs agree on the dates this year. The arghya times in published lists are simply sunset and sunrise, usually for Patna or Delhi; ours are for each city itself, so they differ by the minutes between two cities’ sunsets. Many families make the offering a little before the exact moment, while the Sun is still in sight.

What are the four days of Chhath?
Nahay Khay, the first day, with a purifying bath and one sattvic meal; Kharna, the second, a day-long fast broken in the evening with kheer and roti; the sandhya arghya to the setting Sun on the third; and the usha arghya to the rising Sun on the fourth morning, after which the fast is broken.
