How the date and muhurat are worked out
The date comes from the tithi at sunrise: Bestu Varas is the day on which Shukla Pratipada prevails at sunrise, calculated for each city from the Sun and Moon, never counted as the day after Diwali. We give when Pratipada begins and ends, and the pratahkal muhurat, the first three of the day’s fifteen muhurtas, inside it.
Gujarati almanacs agree on the date this year. When Pratipada begins after sunrise in some year, a few observe the new year that day and most on the next; we follow the sunrise rule. Chopda Pujan itself is done on Diwali, the Amavasya before the new year, not on Bestu Varas morning; its muhurats are listed below for that evening.
