Vastu for the kitchen: the right direction for the stove, sink and cook

Vastu places the kitchen in the south-east, the corner of fire. Here is why, what to do when your kitchen is somewhere else, and how to place the stove and sink so fire and water do not fight.

The kitchen is the room Vastu cares most about after the main door, because it is where fire lives in a home. Get its direction right, the tradition says, and the household eats well and stays healthy; get it badly wrong and the trouble shows up in health and money.

Why the south-east

Vastu maps the eight directions to the elements. The south-east is Agneya, the corner of Agni, fire. Putting the kitchen there places the cooking flame in its own element. It is also practical in India: the morning sun lights the room early, and the hottest afternoon sun is kept off the cook.

Here is how each direction is read, as on our kitchen guide:

Kitchen in Read as
South-East Best — the fire corner
North-West Good — the accepted second choice
East, South, West Workable
North-East Avoid — the most disruptive placement
North Avoid — fire in the wealth zone
South-West Avoid — fire in the earth corner

The north-east is the one to avoid above all. It is the corner of water and of the sacred, the place for a pooja room, and fire there is treated as the worst clash in the house.

Where the stove goes

Inside the kitchen, the same logic applies at a smaller scale. Put the stove in the south-east part of the kitchen, so the cook stands facing east. Facing east while cooking is the single most quoted kitchen rule, and it is a sensible one: morning light falls on the work in front of you.

South and north-west are sound alternatives for the stove. The stove guide lists each direction.

Fire and water apart

The sink and the drinking water belong in the north-east of the kitchen, the water side. The rule people most often break is putting the sink right beside the stove. Vastu reads this as fire and water fighting; a cook would call it splashing oil and a crowded counter. Leave at least a slab's width between them, or a small partition.

Other details

  • Fridge: south-west or north-west, never the north-east corner.
  • Storage: heavy grains and utensils on the south and west walls.
  • Windows and exhaust: on the east or north, so smoke leaves where the light comes in.
  • Colours: warm tones such as orange, red or yellow suit the fire corner; avoid black.

When you cannot move it

Most people live in a flat where the kitchen is where it is. The remedies the tradition offers are small:

  • Move the stove into the south-east of the kitchen even if the room is elsewhere, and face east while cooking.
  • In a north-east kitchen, keep the area as clean, light and uncluttered as you can, and keep the stove off the north-east corner itself.
  • A red or orange element near the stove is used to support fire in a weak direction.

Our Vastu guide covers every room the same way, with what to change and what to do when a room cannot move. The bedroom is the next one most people ask about.
