Mulank and bhagyank: how to work out your numerology numbers

Vedic numerology starts with two numbers from your birth date: the mulank from the day you were born, and the bhagyank from the whole date. Here is how to work out both in under a minute, and what they are read to mean.

Indian numerology, anka jyotish, ties numbers to the nine grahas. Its two basic numbers both come from your date of birth, and both take less than a minute to work out by hand.

Mulank: the day you were born

The mulank (psychic or root number) uses only the day of the month. Add its digits until one digit is left.

  • Born on the 7th: mulank 7.
  • Born on the 15th: 1 + 5 = 6.
  • Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

The mulank is read as how you see yourself and how you come across: your instincts, temperament and first reactions.

Bhagyank: the whole date

The bhagyank (destiny or life-path number) uses the full date: day, month and year. Add every digit, then keep adding until one digit is left.

For 15 February 2002 (15-02-2002):

1 + 5 + 0 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 2 = 12, and 1 + 2 = 3.

The bhagyank is read as the direction your life tends to take: the work and circumstances you are drawn into, whatever your temperament.

Vedic numerology does not keep master numbers. 11 reduces to 2 and 22 to 4, unlike some Western systems.

What each number means

Each number from 1 to 9 is ruled by a graha, and takes on that graha's character:

Number Graha Read as
1 Sun Leadership, independence, authority
2 Moon Sensitivity, intuition, working with people
3 Jupiter Knowledge, teaching, optimism
4 Rahu Unconventional thinking, systems, sudden change
5 Mercury Communication, trade, quick thinking
6 Venus Beauty, comfort, relationships and money
7 Ketu Inner life, research, detachment
8 Saturn Work, patience, slow and lasting results
9 Mars Energy, courage, drive

When the mulank and bhagyank are ruled by friendly grahas, the two are read as pulling in the same direction. When their rulers are enemies, such as the Sun's 1 against Saturn's 8, people often describe a gap between who they are and what life keeps asking of them.

The name number

A third number comes from your name, using the Chaldean letter values, where each letter is worth 1 to 8 and 9 is never assigned. This namank is the one people change when they alter the spelling of a name for numerological reasons.

The Lo Shu grid

The date also fills a Lo Shu grid, a 3×3 square in which each digit of your birth date is placed in its cell. Which numbers repeat and which are missing, and which rows are complete, are read as strengths and gaps.
