ચોઘડિયું દિવસના પ્રકાશનો કે રાતનો આઠમો ભાગ છે, તેથી દિવસમાં આઠ અને રાતમાં આઠ ચોઘડિયાં હોય છે. દરેકનું નામ સાત પ્રકારમાંથી એક પર છે: અમૃત, શુભ અને લાભમાં કામ શરૂ કરવું સારું છે, ચલ પ્રવાસ અને હરતાફરતા કામ માટે યોગ્ય છે, અને રોગ, કાળ તથા ઉદ્વેગ ટાળવામાં આવે છે.
દિવસનું પહેલું ચોઘડિયું વારથી નક્કી થાય છે: રવિવારે ઉદ્વેગ, સોમવારે અમૃત, મંગળવારે રોગ, બુધવારે લાભ, ગુરુવારે શુભ, શુક્રવારે ચલ અને શનિવારે કાળ. બાકીનાં એક નિશ્ચિત ક્રમમાં આવે છે, અને રાતનો પોતાનો અલગ ક્રમ હોય છે.
